Scanner Configuration

Overview

The scanner configuration connects the Dilution Control System to your QCS scanner and maps the profile data to actuator zones. Proper configuration ensures accurate control response.

QCS Integration Required

Before configuring the scanner, ensure your QCS connection is established. See QCS Integration for setup instructions.

QCS Connection Settings

Configure the scanner data source in the Connection Settings dialog:

Scanner Interface Settings

Protocol Modbus TCP or OPC DA
QCS IP Address 192.168.1.50 QCS server or DIU
Port 502 Modbus standard
Poll Interval 1000 ms Profile update rate

Profile Settings

Databox Configuration

Configure how the scanner profile is received and processed:

Profile Dimensions

Number of Databoxes 200 Scanner resolution
Web Width 4800 mm Physical width
Profile Type Basis Weight Measured property
Units g/m² Measurement units

Edge Detection

Configure automatic detection of valid profile edges:

Edge Settings

Front Edge Offset 10 Databoxes to skip at front
Back Edge Offset 10 Databoxes to skip at back
Auto Edge Detection Enabled Automatic edge finding
Edge Threshold 5.0 g/m² Minimum valid reading
Edge Detection

Auto edge detection helps exclude scanner readings outside the actual web width. Adjust the threshold based on your minimum expected basis weight.

Zone Mapping

Zone mapping translates scanner databoxes to actuator zones. This is critical for correct control action.

Scanner Profile (200 Databoxes) Front Back Actuator Zones (48 Zones) Zone 1 Zone 24 Zone 48

Zone Mapping Settings

Number of Zones 48 Actuator zone count
Mapping Direction Front to Back Match physical layout
Mapping Method Average Average databoxes per zone
Zone Overlap 0 Databox overlap between zones

Mapping Calculation

The system automatically calculates the mapping based on:

  • Valid Databoxes: Total databoxes minus edge offsets
  • Databoxes per Zone: Valid databoxes ÷ number of zones
  • Zone Width: Web width ÷ number of zones
Direction Matters

Ensure the mapping direction matches your physical setup. An incorrect direction will cause control to act in the wrong location on the sheet.

Verification Procedure

  1. Verify Profile Display

Open the Profile View and confirm:

    • Profile updates at expected rate
    • Values are in reasonable range
    • No gaps or stuck values
  2. Check Edge Detection

Verify the detected edges match actual web edges:

    • Front edge should align with physical web front
    • Back edge should align with physical web back
    • Adjust offsets if needed
  3. Test Zone Mapping

    Verify zones are correctly mapped:

    • Move one valve manually (e.g., Zone 1)
    • Observe profile change location
    • Change should appear at corresponding profile position
  4. Validate Direction

    Confirm front/back orientation:

    • Zone 1 should affect front side of profile
    • Last zone should affect back side
    • Reverse direction if inverted
